 Lousy Work''Op3n
« Thread Started on Feb 23, 2009, 7:36pm »

Rosa walked mindlessly around the cafe, still wondering why they gave this job to some random 14 year old with no education past 5th grade. Hmm, maybe the crack heads failed the application or something. Anyway she basically just milled around the cafe, stopping every few moments to ask if they needed more coffee or anything else this morning. A small sigh escaped her lips when she saw the familiar old couple sitting in the same booth as always, a pleasant smile crossing over there faces when they saw she was working and not busy at all. Mrs. Betty had showed up every day for an early breakfast, always tipping to much and saying she wasn't ready to order until she spotted Rosa somewhere.

Almost without realizing it her feet where carrying her to there table, a smile crossing over her face. "Good morning Mrs. Betty, same as usual?" Rosa questioned, her voice slightly above a whisper. Mrs.Betty quickly nodded then went off asking if Rosa needed anything, her husband nodding along. They went over all the basics again, if Rosa needed a room, they had one, needed some money, they had some.

One again, like any other day, Rosa assured them that she was absolutely fine, got them their food and then ran off to hide in her booth, back in the far corner. Almost as soon as she was sitting she was cracking open a book, one side in German the other in English. She underlined the English words she knew, which ended up to be like, two a page. It was a short children book and reading it in German was very easy. English however, was extremely tough. "Der kleine Junge verlor seine Lieblings-tragen." she muttered, accent carrying the words effortlessly. Now... English.

She stared at the page yet the words did not get any easier, not any clearer. With a frustrated sigh she once again started over, reading the line in German then starting to study the English.

Then came him. Okay, more like an it "Need some help pretty lady?" he ask. Maybe he was saying this because Rosa looked 16. Or maybe he didn't care she was 14. What he said wasnt a question either. It was one of those 'say-yes-or-i'll-kill-you' type of things. In response, Rosa said absolutely nothing but "Wertlos Verlierer."

This of course started the 'what-did-you-just-say-you-worthless-little-dumb-bitch' thing, which Rosa responded to which calm silence.

His mind was nothing but a tilt a whirl at top speed. A wheel painting from a carnival, where the paper spun in s steady circle as you squirted paint onto it, ad when the paper stopped spinning, you had an explosion of flattened color where the paint had splayed. His brain was still spinning, and he was trying to slow it down. At least the different colored feelings and thoughts had slowed up, he could barely feel or think anymore. He just wanted to lull himself, get away from the endless changing that was happening in his world.

Shayne, the brother he had thought was dead for six long years, was really alive, and a member of his rival gang. He had no friends, he was too afraid to make them because he was so afraid he'd loose them. And after Shayne's 'death' he didn't think he could take loss. But now his whole reality was turned on its head. Shayne was alive... and he almost wasn't happy about it. Not to say he wasn't glad that Shayne was alive... it was just that too much was changing, he was finally getting over it...

Jessie needed to clear his head, somewhere he wouldn't get drunk or get in a fight. Fallen Oak sounded like a good place to be. So in he went, hoping to get coffee and maybe a pastry, simply to busy his hands, mouth and digestive tract. Not like that would do much for him mind.

It was reasonably crowded, but quiet. A few old couples, a few younger ones, trying to share little half hearted smiles as they pushed around their seven dollar pasta dishes. Jessie sighed. He was in her alone. Alone. Without his brother... like it should have been, like it had been for six years. He ran his fingers through his hair looking for a seat, but he couldn't tell much from the door. So he ambled in, going farther back to try and see if some of the back booths were empty. Some were, but one wasn't/ there was a young girl in one of them, a man much too old for her standing above her. Jessie furrowed his eyebrows together before marching over. It wasn't his business.... he should ahve stayed quiet... but she looked so young and so unwelcoming to the man, who could easily overpower her.

Jessie walked up as if he belonged there. "I'm sorry, did you want something?" He asked the man.

ooc- we can rp emily/rose later. I felt like using Jessie. but they 8 years apart, so im thinking maybe a sort of big brother/protective kind of relationship for them?

It's not like Rosa couldn't dominate with her cane or anything, she just figured Mr. Bossman wouldnt be to happy with her slapping people shitless. Plus, Mrs. Betty was giving her that look, and she could almost here Mrs. Betty talking to her husband about 'going over there'. When the other guy came over and started talking to the sleazy looking guy. Mr. Sleazy turned and gave this kid the 'who-the-hell-are-you' stare for a good few moments before turning back to her, a amused smile crossing his face. "We'll talk later, sweetheart." he promised, walking off like he won a million bucks.

Okay, now that left this guy. Rosa stared up at him for a few moments, emerald eyes curious. After a few moments her head tipped left, a questioning expression on her face. "Umm, thanks." she stared, eyes remaining curious and maybe a little confused. Normally, that only happened and movies. Well, a slime ball talked to her everyday, only did movies did some random guy come over and do something about it.

Her eyes stayed on the new kid for several moments before Mr. Sleazy crossed into her line of vision, by the looks of it meeting someone for a drug deal. A small shake of her head cleared away troubling thoughts, eyes looking first to the table, then to the book on top of it, then to her cane (which she grabbed and pulled slightly closer) and finally, up at this guy.

"I'm Rosa. Thanks for making Mr. Sleazy take a hike." she said to him, a small smile crossing her face. Although she tried to make it a little less apparent her accent was still pretty noticeable. "Wanna sit and chill for a few?" she asked, looking around the cafe. Most people already had food and by the looks of it most of her co-workers were doing the same thing. Part of her mind was trying to decide why someone would help her, while the other side lingered on other things like learning English soon and going back to the doctor to see if she still needed the tight beige brace he was having her wear on her right leg, all the way to her knee.

For whatever reason she felt like hanging out with her possible new friend for a little while before he left or she had to get back to work. A new friend would be nice, since currently it was limited to a stupid boxer and well, that was about it.

(ooc: Sure, I love big brothers! I think they rawk <3)

Jessie could tell she was surprised that he was there, and that made perfect sense really. Here he was, another sketchy looking stranger. Another older male. Well, he had nothing but goo intentions, and knew that since he'd gotten rid of the sleaze ball he should probably go sit down to sip coffee in solitude, but he couldn't get up and leave. He didn't want to. What if the guy came back? He felt a strong desire to protect, probably because he felt so exposed now that Shayne was back. His brother could always read him like a book.

Then she spoke, in a soft, pretty, accented voice and he smiled slightly. She wasn't from around her then. He took a glance at her book, languages. Interesting. "Oh sure." Jessie gave her a small smile and decided to sit down since she had offered.

"And you're welcome Rosa. It was no trouble.. you looked uncomfortable so I just thought I'd help you out." There was too much fighting these days, he needed a little light in the world. Watching a grown man force a teenager out of here would only make him feel worse for not stopping it. Jessie was a rather peaceful person--hence being in the hearts.

"My name is Jessie." He told her with a smile. His eyes focused again on the book, training to read the title upside down. the only part he could read said something about German and English. Was she trying to learn English? She spoke it pretty well... He wondered if she needed help, not that he knew German, but obviously he spoke English.

He looked up into her inquisitive green eyes and wondered what she was thinking about. But too shy to ask her flat out, so he just smiled.

Rosa watched Mr. Sleaze run off with some slut, which made her laugh a little inside. When person agreed to sit down she turned back to him, a pleasant look on her face. "I'm 'appy you did, some'in told me my boos would fire me for beating people up with my cane." she said to him, a small giggle escaping afterward. As a sort of visual aid she lifted her cane up so he could see the top. The top was a silver wolf head with a very old look to it. She put it down on the floor by her bad leg. My name is Jessie Rosa let her mind process the name as she nodded. " Jessie, I like that name. Reminds me of a book my brother read to me, called 'The Outsider's' or something."

She smiled and glimpsed around, eyes straying back to her book. Part of her mind believed she had seen Jessie look at it, while the other part lingered on the fact that this was some random guy she didn't know and was probably trusting to easily. Oh well, she didnt care. "I'm guessing you know English, right? Like how to read it? My parents were Asian and German, so I can read some Japanese and German. Doesn't 'elp too much here." she joked, smiling.

Emerald eyes scanned the German text and pointed to 'Der kleine Junge verlor seine Lieblings-tragen'. "See, Der kleine Junge verlor seine Lieblings-tragen is easy. 'The little boy lost his favorite bear.' While in English, I can't even show you where the line is." Rosa said this smiling a bit, half amused she couldn't read English, half amused it was so hard trying to.

" See, I know what it says, but I can't match the words to the text." she muttered, now growing annoyed with herself. Her eyes glanced up at Jessie then around once more. Rosa needed to know her environment, it made her nervous when she didnt. For whatever reason she felt watched, and a quick glance confirmed that Mr. Sleaze and some other dudes where sitting and eating. Another look confirmed that Mrs. Betty and her husband where coming this way. Rosa waved to the like an innocent 14 year old, smiling.

Even at 63, it didnt take Mrs. Betty long to reach her, one firm hand securing her shoulder. "We just wanted to come over and say we're headed out. Give us a call if you need anything. You better call if you do, Rosalynn." she said.

Like anyone with a grandmother Rosa stood up and hugged Mrs.Betty and her husband, although that only made it more apparent on why she needed the cane. It was also obviously painful. After the hugs she sat and looked to Jessie, an embarrassed look crossing over her calm face. " Sorry, old people will be old people." she said to Jessie, the embarrassed look being joined by the slightly nervous look. Together these expressions made her face contort into an innocent and somewhat cute look.

She had an interesting accent and he probably wouldn't have been able to guess it without the help of her book, which had to be German. Because it certainly wasn't Japanese sounding. it was too harsh for Japanese.

And did she often beat up people with her cane? that made him uncomfortable, that was her first response to strangers--to beat them? Was that the only reason he too wasn't bruised all over. No doubt it would hurt, you could kill with a cane like that, the silver wolf head with sharp features.

Jessie nodded lightly at her as she explained that she could read and translate it into words, but she couldn't read it. That was impressive, she could speak very well. "I could help you learn to read." he offered. He didn't want her lost here, it was a new world. She needed to know how to read the language, even though reading people and situations help too, he could only help when it came to english. And really, he needed a distraction, something to do, some way to help someone since he felt so lost himself. He couldn't read the writing on his own heart.

Then an old couple came over. Were they related to her? he couldn't be sure, but somehow didn't think so. they seemed like faithful customers. the ones that make friends over a table or counter, and offer to change the relationship to out side, but it never happens. That was Jessie's relationship with most girls. Waitresses would talk to him in booths for hours, but on the street, he was no one to them.

"Of course, don't worry about it." It wasn't like the couple had interrupted anything.

Rosie was not what you call a people person. Normally she finishes work, go picks up the mutts from home, takes them on a 6 hour adventure through the city, takem 'em home, feeds them, then sleeps. Leaving space for whatever thugs, preps or stoners wanna bug her. Easy.

"Do you like, want food? Or like, coffee?" she asked, raising her head and tilting it to the side.

Unlike most partially normal people, Rosa didn't eat often. Maybe like, once a day, twice if someone notices. As a result, when around other people she always had to ask if they were hungry every so often to make sure they went starving to death. Yup!

"It's sad, really. Iv'e been 'ere fer 14 years, and can't read a thing. Well, I guess if you take out the yeers it was absolutely impossible to learn anything at all, Iv'e had two years to learn this stuff. So far, I can 'ead basic signs like 'Stop' and 'No parking'."

A amused look crossed her face as she turned to the book, looking at the plain text. Gee, how fun was this. A ringtone of 'Stupid, answer' came from her back pocket after a few moments. A beep, a few nods, then nothing.

"Stupid people like calling me!" she annouced, shrugging and putting the phone back in her pocket. She took a few moments to look at Jessie. Something about him confused her.

Whatever.

"Oh, um, I guess I could eat something," he said. Kessie often just forgot to eat and didn't do anything about his hunger, he needed to be reminded. he motioned over the waiter and asked for a cheeseburger with fries. He just felt hungry for it, but knowing him, he wouldn't eat the whole thing. The woman then bustled off to get him his food, obviously desperate for work to do. Maybe no one was sitting in her section of the cafe, it was decently full.

"Oh well i understand, other things take up your time. Reading becomes hard to do when you have to fight to stay alive. No one has so much free time." He said. Gangs took away a certain amount of leisure. The arts were dying, they were backtracking as a race. Jessie had hopes for them, and he was determined to help Rose learn to read. Because it would help her understand the world, move up in life--she was obviously solitary and quite young. She probably needed someone to help her, look out for her. Even if she had a gang for that---she needed more. Didn't she? Like a really friend? Or a brother? he had already begun to worry about her well being, a beautiful young girl who couldn't read english. There were so many problems that came with those things.

"How do you know its not a friend or something calling you?" he said when she said stupid people were calling her. And the ringtone... it was like a put down. What was Rosie going for? And what did it mean? Did she just think people stupid or was it that she felt stupid. He wasn't sure. He couldn't quite understand her.

Rosa nodded with understanding, mind now on the call. Why was Tip calling her? It wasn't like Rosa had forced her to have sex with a drug dealer. Whatever though. It was pretty obvious the kid was either Mikey's or some hobo's. How did that make it Rosa's responsibility?

Rosa nodded when Jessie spoke again, but was otherwise lost in her thoughts. Okay, so Tip was going to leave the kid with Rosa. Rosa the 13... 14? Year old without a clue was now going to have to support a kid. Someone must really love her...

"How do you know its not a friend or something calling you?"

"Friends never call. I don't have friends. Well, I have friends, just not the type you wanna blab about. Mostly friends of my big brother. That was actually one of his pregnant friends about to drop a baby on me because she can't handle it and a drug habit." she told him, although her face was still out there.

Rosa shook her head and looked to the book, face constantly twisting into different expressions.

"Kinda sad, once again."
she started. "I took three bullets for my family, my brother, his wife and a friend that's family enough. And they thank me by leaving me with an abusive alcoholic crack head!"

Rosie had to laugh a bit, shaking her head with a calm and slightly hurt look on her face. 'Hey Stupid's" came from her pocket again.

"Yes, I'm aware.... Uhhh...." Sigh "Yeah. Fallen Oak. Okay. Love you too, bye."

Now she looked bummed.

"Yay, I get a baby!"

He understood that feeling, not having friends of your own, having friends through your siblings. Growing up people only liked of hated him based on Shayne. Jessie had no independent identity, and maybe that was what he felt had been taken from him now that he learned Shayne was alive. Jessie was not independent of his family, he was not his own man. Again, for the second time in his life, he was Shayne's brother. Just when he had moved out of his elder sibling's shadow he was pushed back in.

Wait, bullets? Three of them? That was crazy, she was only what.... fourteen year old? And she'd been shot that many times. Jessie didn't know how many times he'd been shot, but the first time had been at sixteen, and Rosie, had taken 3 up to this point. That was crazy. Had his life been so sheltered? Or was hers just that bad? With all those brothers one would think someone would have tried to look out for her. If he had a sister he would want her protected.

"You're going to take charge of someone's baby?" He repeated in disbelief. For one, she was too young to take care of anyone's baby, especially one that wasn't even hers. She hadn't done anything to put this on herself in that kind of mess, and yet she was taking a baby for someone probably old enough to have to realize their own mistakes and take the blame for them. But he didn't say this out loud, Rose was being a good friend to this woman. But this woman, as she said before, was not a real friend, more like a friend of a friend.

"You're really excited about that? Won't it be a lot of work? Especially for one person who's so young..." Jessie asked her.

Rosa just sort of shrugged. Really, she didnt want the kid. She didnt want her brother, his stupid drugs, or even his stupid friends. A sigh, to keep herself from exploding. She turned and talked to the window

"I just.. I just need to help this kid. I mean, she's only two and Tips has already tried to suffocate her and abandon her. The poor kid doesnt deserve the crappy life she has. Maybe, since mines already messed up, I can fix her's. Or, at the most make it better."
she told him and the window, her face twisting to be somewhat sad, but still calm.

Slowly she started to feel a bit better about this. The baby could live with her and Chance. Mikey was still sending cash ffor her to live on. Mrs. Betty could help teach the baby stuff like reading when it got older... Rosa stopped there, mentally slapping herself. What if Jessie was a cop or something? Mrs. Betty could rat her out too. Rosa didnt know exactly what for, but she could do something that involved the police.

"Whoa, you're not a cop, right?" she asked, a small smile appearing on her face.

Eyes wandered to the clock. Her shift had already ended, but this was pretty fun.

"I'm not exactly excited, but at least I'll no she isnt hurt or something. The kid's still family to me. Sure, it'll be work but I'm sure I can teach her the basics, like reading, writing, how to talk and potty-training. Then, what I cant handle, like I dunno, math maybe, can be taught by a book or something. My big brother sends me $200 a week so I can keep myself and my dog feed and clothed and stuff. He's been doing that for a year and I barely use any of it. So im covered for maybe a week at least." she said, thinking and talking at the same time.

Money would be an issue, and her brother would probably stop sending cash when he found out the baby was with Rosie. Or, maybe he'd send more.

"My brother isnt that bad of a guy, he just has some issues."

This girl was really devoting a lot of time and energy into making this child grow up with knowledge and a little love, and Jessie was going to respect that. Not enough people cared anymore, about kid, about learning, about real love. Jessie just did not have the words to tell her that he thought it was noble and grand of her to take this child and already have such a commitment to bringing it up as best she knew how. But what words could he use that wouldn't sound corny, lame or forced? So Jessie,m true to form said nothing.

"Me? A cop? Nope." Jessie said shaking his head. Did he looked like a cop? But he was in charge of many personnel files. he kept tabs on everyone, and he had already started making mental notes about Rose, her family, and these friends, the waitress and the man who'd been harassing her throughout the conversation, it was just how he operated, but none of it was needed for anything, she wasn't a threat and he couldn't send Tips to jail. Hell, the police barely had any say anymore, whatever gang had more influence had the say around here these days.

"I'm sure your brother is a good guy, I'll try and give you some money if I manage to make any." The Hearts operated - on some level- like a communist nation, they gave to their own kind, at least, that's what he figured, Jon always seemed to be helping those of his who were having hard times.

And brothers, Jessie did not want to think about brothers. He hadn't even spoken to Shayne since he found him alive (not dead like he'd thought for 6 years).

Rosie really didnt know what to say until he mentioned money. Normally, people offering her money pissed her off alot. But, Jessie was just offering help. A relaxed and happy smiled pushed itself to her face.

"I really appreciate the offer, but I dont need money." she told him, not letting any trace of anger or annoyance slip into her words.

She was thinking about the kid again. She was two and nameless. Rosie had full intention to give her a name. Something pretty, uncommon, different and most importantly, not a stripper name. Max maybe. Just Max. Rosa, Max and Chance. Or, maybe something like Kiara or Keirei.

"Oh, yeah. Not a cop. Good." she said, nodding. "Tips is bringing me the little kid tommorow. Know any good names? Tips didnt name her. I know a lot of pretty Japanese names, but I want the kid to have some friends." she joked, or tried to, smiling.

Rosa would stick to her ideas. Maybe something realted to flowers. Hmm. Akina maybe. Blah.

Maybe she would wait till she saw the baby. Turning to the back of her book she began to scribble down names with a pen from her pocket. Any and all the names she could think of.

Max
Ash
Akina
Ayame
Cho
Hana
Kaeda
Aria

After a few moments she moved to a new page. Names that reflected her past in someway...

Leiko
Nozomi
Suki

That wrapped up Japanese.. Now German

Alease
Alicia

So many names, all for one kid. She could probbaly think off enough names to re-name everyone in Austraila. Not that she planned on it. She studied the names, writing down some notes. Her favorites were the two guy names, Ash and Max.

"Naming babies is hard." she said, laughing a bit.

Rosie seemed a little irritated when he'd mentioned money, but he'd only been trying to be helpful in some small way. He didn't want to offend her, but he figured offering help was safe. But there were people like that, who wanted to do everything themselves. Even though she was already sacrificing enough taking care of the kid and really could accept some charity. But Jessie didn't mention it, he wasn't going to call her out on it, he didn't mind keeping his money in his own pocket, he just wouldn't have minded giving her some.

Names? Jessie had no experience naming things, he didn't know any good names. he'd never had a pet to name, a little sibling where he might have had some say. Names had meanings, all kinds of things you could use. Did Rosa want it to mean something specific? If so, what? Something that had to do with the struggle of life, or something light and beautiful that didn't really match the state of the world? It got Jessie to thinking what he might someday name a child of his--if he ever had one-- which he doubted he would because he wasn't sure that anyone could find love in this world today, enough that they could share the love with a child, care enough to take care of it.

So Jessie just decided to list all the girl's names he could think of that were sort of pretty, "Camille, Emma, Emily, Gwen, Sophie..." Jessie shrugged. But those were pretty basic and unimaginative names, maybe she wanted something with a bit more ring to it.

"Maybe you should just read your list out loud to the baby and see which one she's likes better," He suggested with a laugh. Jessie really had no idea what she should call the kid.

She smiled and listened to the names he rambled off. Gwen was pretty, but just Gwen. No Guinevere or something lame like that.

"My faves are Max, Gwen, Ash... Jess! Aria... Lee, Leah. Something that's different. Something that's not common." she nodded, then laughed at his suggestion.

"Read them out loud to her? Hmm, interesting, big brother." she told him.

Oh yeah, Jess was officially her big brother now. Claimed. The end. No question.

Rosie smiled and made stick people in the corner of her paper. Bored. Emerald eyes turned to the clock. Chance would start worrying soon. Stupid mutt, he'd probably come here though.. she thought to herself, nodding. The sun now shined brightly outside. It seemed peaceful. She looked around, searching for the random guy who'd like, explode in three seconds. Too quiet, too strange.

The calmness made her edgy, nervous. Pulling her cell out, she called the house.

Blah, ring, message machine.

"Hey, mutt. I'm at work, get a leash and come down her, kay?" she told the mutt.

It was funny, because he would listen. He would come with a leash, perfectly casual and come find her. Always did. Her mind began wandering, thinking about her plan today. Maybe a walk in the woods, or no even better, the pet store. You can never go wrong in spoiling a dog. That seemed fun really, going to the mall with Chance to go to the pet store to buy a bunch of treats. Stop and get jeans or something maybe.
